Hand-Arm & Whole Body Vibration Survey

HAV Surveys

Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV) Survey

Hand-Arm vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a widespread hazard in many industries and occupations involving the use of hand-held power tools, hand-guided machinery or hand-fed machines.

HAVS is caused by working with vibrating tools and causes damage to nerves, blood vessels and joints of the hand, wrist and arm. This changes the sensation of the fingers and can lead to permanent numbness of fingers and muscle weakness. Workers using hand-held power tools for prolonged periods are at serious risk of developing HAVS.

The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, places a duty on employers to carry out a HAV risk assessment to identify the measures that need to be taken to meet the regulations.

As part of the risk assessment process it may be necessary to measure the magnitude of vibration your workers are exposed to during their work.

MEC carry out the measurement and exposure assessment of HAV and our services include:

  • Measurement of the magnitude of vibration using a HAV meter

  • Determination of daily exposures to vibration and comparison to the Exposure Action Value (EAV) and the Exposure Limit Value (ELV)

  • A detailed HAV report to help you develop an action plan as part of your risk assessment process

Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) Survey

Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) is transmitted through the seat or feet of employees who drive mobile machines, or other work vehicles, over rough and uneven surfaces as a main part of their job. Large shocks and jolts may cause health risks including back-pain.

The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, places a duty on employers to carry out a WBV risk assessment to identify the measures that need to be taken to meet the regulations.

As part of the risk assessment process it may be necessary to measure the magnitude of vibration your workers are exposed to during their work.

MEC carry out the measurement and exposure assessment of WBV and our service includes:

  • Measurement of the magnitude of vibration using a WBV meter

  • Determination of daily exposures to vibration and comparison to the Exposure Action Value (EAV) and the Exposure Limit Value (ELV)

  • A detailed WBV report to help develop an action plan as part of your risk assessment process
